The collection consists of papers of James Eppinger and the Eppinger family and includes letterbooks, a journal, and a property book containing entries listing property bought and sold in Georgia; birth, death and sales of slaves; cash accounts for sales and purchases. The materials document Eppinger's business activities, cotton trade, Georgia land sales, plantation management and farming, his service in the Georgia House of Representatives, his law practice, Georgia politics, and Reconstruction. The papers also include a form book, a cash book, a legal ledger, and two books containing recipes for ink, soap, as well as remedies for various illnesses.

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series IV. Early Office reflects Russell's first years as a United States senator and reveals him as a strong supporter of New Deal legislation. Some gubernatorial papers were transferred to Russell's senate office and are found in this series. This series contains correspondence with some printed materials and is incomplete. There are few files documenting Russell's office during the first eleven years, especially from 1938 to 1943, the main series for this time period are Early Office, Political, Political Patronage, Personal, and a few files in General. Any additional non-textual materials originally filed with papers were removed for preservation purposes and improved access. Janet B. Scarborough Merritt was elected to represent the Sumter County (at the time, the 68th district) in the Georgia State House in 1964. The only woman in the Georgia State House of Representatives when she was elected, and the first to represent Sumter County, Merritt called herself a "full-time" representative. The topic of the role of women in government is thoroughly documented throughout Merritt's speeches and writings. She served four terms in that position: she was elected again in 1966, in 1968 (after reapportionment combined Sumter with Macon and Schley counties into the new 46th district), and in 1970. In 1972, after a second reapportionment, Merritt was defeated for re-election by her former colleague in the House, Oliver Oxford, in a run-off. Merritt ran against Oxford a second time in the 1974 election, but was again narrowly defeated in a run-off. The collection documents Merritt's campaigns, her time in the state legislature and her community activities including heavy involvement in the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) Of particular note are materials documenting Merritt's ongoing battle to change Georgia's state flag. In 1969, Merritt sponsored a bill to change the Georgia flag adopted in 1955, shortly after the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling, back to the 1879 version, which did not include the Confederate battle flag. Included in the collection are speeches, notes, journals, correspondence, clippings, photographs, artifacts, and audiovisual material.

The collection consists of the papers of Rodney M. Cook from 1951 to 1978. The political series (1951-1978) contains papers relating to Cook's campaigns for public office including the Atlanta Board of Aldermen (1961, 1965), Atlanta Mayor (1969), Georgia Legislature (1965-1970), Congress (1972), and Georgia Governor (1978). The series also contains records relating to Cook's involvement with Republican Party activities at the local, state, and national level. The Aldermen series (1951-1972) documents Cook's service on the Atlanta Board of Aldermen. Records include subject files and committee files relating to such subjects as civil rights, Atlanta government, urban renewal, and zoning. The legislative papers relate to his tenure as a representative-at-large for Fulton County in the Georgia Legislature (1952-1972) and include such topics as Cook's support of the seating of Julian Bond, the 1971 special session for redistricting, his service as chairman of the Joint Senate-House Committee on Computerized Criminal Records Study, and his involvement with the development of Atlanta.

The Roy Vincent Harris Papers consist of the papers of Roy V. Harris from 1931-1983. Contains copies of the conservative civil rights journal The Citizen (1975-1983), which contains articles contributed by Harris. The collection also includes personal scrapbooks (1945-1946; 1956-1969); a videotaped interview with Harris, in which he discusses his service with the state legislature and the Board of Regents, the growth of the Medical College of Georgia, and Augusta politics; and audio taped interviews with Harris in which he discusses Georgia politics, education in Georgia, and his thoughts on Huey Long and Tom Watson.

The Georgia House of Representatives Communications Office, previously known as the Georgia House Public Information Office, provides media credentials and workspace for journalists who cover the Georgia House of Representatives. The Director of Media Relations for House Communications, under the direction of the Director of Media Services, supervises the Communications staff to facilitate the coverage by reporters of legislative activity. The staff provides bill texts and reports of pending legislation and disseminates press releases and calendars of business to accredited reporters. In addition, the office maintains taped excerpts from floor debates and online daily activity feeds. The majority of the collection consists of audio recordings (see separate AV finding aid) documenting the regular and special sessions of the Georgia House of Representatives, as well as some Senate proceedings, and photographs maintained by the House photographer. This collection includes biographical sketches of legislators, legislative reports, speeches, research materials, press releases, slide show scripts, audiovisual materials and photographs.

Audiovisual Materials includes two compact discs, 1,284 audiocassettes, 236 digital audio tapes (DAT), 603 quarter-inch open reel audio tapes, and 66 VHS videocassettes, documenting the regular and special sessions of the Georgia House of Representatives, as well as some Senate proceedings. The audio reels primarily document the daily activities on the floor of the House during regular and special sessions from 1975 to 1998. The audio cassettes, from 1974 to 2004, focus more extensively on budget hearings and committee meetings, most notably those of the Appropriations Committee.

Hugh Peterson (1898-1961), of Ailey, Georgia, served as a representative to the Georgia legislature from 1923 to 1931, a state senator from 1931 to 1932, and a United States Representative from Georgia's First Congressional District from 1934 to 1946. His wife, Patience Elizabeth Russell Peterson (1902-2002), was the daughter of Judge Richard B. Russell, Sr. and sister of Senator Richard B. Russell, Jr. Peterson was heavily involved in creating the Georgia State Government Reorganization Bill of 1931 and, as a U.S. Representative, was active in sponsoring farm legislation. His congressional work included service on the Transportation, Territories, Rivers and Harbors, Public Lands, and Elections committees. After losing the 1946 election to Prince Preston of Statesboro, Peterson worked with General Lucius Clay in Germany in 1947 as a consultant. After his return, he devoted his time to practicing law in Ailey and serving as a lobbyist in Washington, D. C., for various businesses with interests in Georgia. The collection includes political, business and personal papers as well as campaign memorabilia, photographs, artifacts, maps, and books, all generated and collected by Hugh Peterson, Sr. The collection documents Hugh Peterson, Sr., Patience Russell Peterson (wife), Hugh Peterson, Jr. (son), their extended family (the Petersons and the Russells), and persons active in Georgia politics as well as members of Congress, other politicians and various business people active in Washington, D.C. during the 1920s through the 1960s.

The collection consists of correspondence, writings, printed material, photographs, financial papers, and scrapbooks. The correspondence is divided into family and business with family letters mainly among Alexander H. Stephens, John A. Stephens and Linton Stephens. They discuss family matters, politics and legal cases. Included is a letter from Alexander H. Stephens describing his trip to Athens to take his entrance examination, in which he describes the university and town as well as the countryside between Athens and Washington, Georgia. Business correspondence includes letters from Herschel Johnson, Howell Cobb, Joseph E. Brown, and Joseph H. Lumpkin. There are also items relating to John Stephens' imprisonment at Johnson Island (OH) during the Civil War. Letters during wartime included lists the members of the Stephens Rifles, flag design proposals, petitions for military positions, and discussions on the release of a Union officer from Andersonville. There is a folder of 1851 correspondence concerning a possible duel between Thomas W. Thomas and James M. Smythe, and materials regarding the surveying of Michigan and Texas Territories. Printed material includes several speeches of Alexander H. Stephens. The scrapbooks contain newspapers clippings about Alexander H. Stephens. Included is a plantation account book of the Simpson plantation, in which are lists of enslaved people, a journal of daily farm work, printed rules for managing farms and slaves, and signed contracts with freedmen.

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series IX. Legislative is primarily constituent mail, but includes legislative drafts, memoranda, hearing transcripts, and correspondence with congressional colleagues. Although official senate committee records remain with each committee and, when retired by the committee, they are transferred to the Center for Legislative Archives, National Archives and Records Administration, in Washington, D.C., as part of the permanent records of Congress, Senator Russell retained copies of some materials related to these committees. Subgroup C, Series V. Personal contains correspondence and material of a personal nature including invitations, greetings, announcements, commendations, gifts, family material, etc. With the exception of some correspondence with his mother, all family correspondence was removed to Exhibit B and restricted by donor agreement. Especially noteworthy are the materials related to History, Miscellaneous, and Trips. While History generally has materials relating to Russell's interest in the subject, specifically the Civil War, Russell occasionally designated certain items to be placed here. For example, at his direction, research and strategy files from the 1960 civil rights debates are located here. Miscellaneous has a significant amount of correspondence from personal friends. Trips contains correspondence and material on all of Senator Russell's trips including those made in his capacity as a member or chairman of a senate committee. For example, correspondence and material from Russell's 1943 global tour of the war front as chairman of a special senate committee to investigate overseas military bases demonstrate the senator's work on such assignments. During many of these overseas trips prior to 1950, Russell had very revealing correspondence with his mother, which is included. Trips are filed under year in which they were made. If more than one trip was made within a year, the trips were filed alphabetically by country within the year.

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series VI. Political not only spans the entire senate career of Russell but also carries over the gubernatorial office with the 1932 senatorial campaign and the early senate office procedures through Russell's office filing reorganization circa 1943. The Political series is a rich source of documentation for studying political campaigns in the mid-twentieth century. The campaign files cover Senator Russell's campaigns of 1932, 1936, 1942, 1948, 1954, 1960, and 1966. In addition to the senatorial campaign files, the series contains files documenting Russell's unsuccessful 1952 race for United States president. Any additional non-textual materials originally filed with papers were removed for preservation purposes and improved access. These materials include photographs, audiovisual items, scrapbooks, vertical files, memorabilia, and books. The Special Name files contain information at a particular point in time on individuals whom Senator Russell considered of enough interest to warrant an individual folder. Such individuals include Lyndon B. Johnson, Eugene Talmadge, Charles Crisp, Herman E. Talmadge, Ralph McGill, Strom Thurmond, Orval Faubus, and Barry Goldwater, among others.

The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection, Subgroup C, Series XV: General is composed mainly of correspondence and printed materials relating to federal agencies and departments. Arrangement is chronological by latest date, and within each year date, file headings are by agency or by subject and arranged alphabetically. Because of the close relationship between the passage of legislation by the Congress and its implementation by the federal government, there is significant overlap between the General series and the Legislative series. Any additional non-textual materials originally filed with papers were removed for preservation purposes and improved access. The Richard B. Russell, Jr. Collection Subgroup D: Winder Papers were gathered at the request of the Russell Estate executors in the early 1980s, Russell Library staff appraised materials at the Russell family home place in Winder, Georgia, for the purpose of identifying those items which should be added to the collection at the Library. Staff members had full access to search the house and property to locate materials. This addendum to the original conveyance of the Senator's collection documents his personal life and early career and fills gaps in documentation provided by materials already at the Library. The Winder Materials are divided into five series: Early Years, School Years, Georgia Legislative and Pre-Gubernatorial Years, Georgia Gubernatorial Years, and United States Senatorial Years. Any additional non-textual materials originally filed with papers were removed for preservation purposes and improved access. These materials include photographs, audiovisual items, scrapbooks, vertical files, memorabilia, and books.
